Oral Hygiene

The single biggest factor in keeping Your Teeth looking and feeling your best is toothpaste and toothbrush.

And when i talk about taking care of your teeth, i don’t mean going to your dentist every year or so. Oh, by the way, you DO go to the dentist , right? Actually, a lot of people do not because of the expense, or maybe because they have no time to (personally, i think that’s a crock because it’s something you should make time for).  Another way to protect your teeth is to follow a program of regular Oral Hygiene care.  And i’m not only talking about brushing, but also in using Dental Floss. Dental Floss is the most underutilized, but effective way of taking care of your teeth because this instrument cleans areas of your teeth (between them) that your Tooth Brush cannot.

Oral Care demands regular brushing of your teeth atleat several times a day, especially after every meal.   Toothpaste goes all the way back to the Egyptian times.  In those times Toothpaste was probably a crude mix of spices and herbs. Now this combination didn’t exactly have a wonderful taste, but it was probably pretty effective in keeping there teeth clean enough.

Then fast forward to the 1800’s and the oral care industry became a growth industry . Now in this day and age toothpaste  was a mixture of salts and chalk which was designed more for scraping the junk off your teeth (like sandpaper) rather than keep Your Mouth clean.  But this was not a good way of cleaning your .This scraping would take off the enamel on your teeth, which was there to protect your teeth.

In the 1900’s, Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda made it’s way into our oral care lives.  The era of teeth whitening had just begun. But it didn’t get popular until the mid 1900’s. The the first collapsible tube was made, by Colgate and Company, which is similar to todays tube. And the formula used then was almost the same as today’s with the exception that we use alittle more hydrogen peroxide to get that whitening more pronounce.

Then fluoride started to hit the market in the mid 1900’s as well.   Although still considered controversial, and not good when ingested in large quantities,it is factr that it does lessen cavities in little kids. It does the job in lowering cavities in everyone, and is also part of the water supply, so it can’t be so bad ; ).

As in many other products, different ingredients are sometimes mixed into the fold and marketed as healthier, or better, yet the scientific proof is in most cases, not there.  As to the application of the toothpaste, you do not need a lot in order to get the job done.  As in a certain shampoo might say, a little  dab’ll do ya.

And to appeal to kids, or just the grownup that wants a good taste, the flavor of toothpaste comes in different tastes. But in terms of health, the flavor has no effect on the quality of the product, although it may get you to brush longer. That really is the only advantage.  So take care of those teeth.  You’re health will thank you for it ; ).

In the video below, i have included a tutorial on how to keep your teeth and gums healthy.  Enjoy!!
